Vehicle Maintenance Tips for College Students

Sending your son or daughter off to college can be an overwhelming experience - don't let vehicle maintenance add to your stress. If your college-bound son/daughter has a vehicle, you will want to make sure they keep a few things in mind when it comes to maintenance.   
Here are a few simple tips to share with  your student as they begin their journey away from home.

  • Change the Oil Every 3,000 Miles/3months. This is one of the simplest preventative maintenance tips that a college student should remember.   Changing your oil will help keep  your vehicle in good shape and hopefully extend the service life of the vehicle.   This is also a great time for your qualified technician to inspect the vehicle for any safety issues or other problems that might be lurking.   
  • Check Your Tires – Make sure your tires are in good condition. Keep you tires inflated to the proper pressure level. Also check your tire-tread levels. Goodyear has some excellent tire care tips for you to follow.
  • Don’t Sit on Car Problems – If you think something is "wrong" with your vehicle, take it to a mechanic. Don’t sit on the problem for weeks wondering if that noise is . Warning lights on the dash must be respected as they indicate there is a problem in a vehicle system. Ignoring the problem can allow it to get worse and potentially represents an unsafe operating condition.
  • Have an Emergency Roadside Kit – Every student should go to college with an emergency roadside kit in their car. It should include jumper cables, a flashlight, a first aid kit, vehicle fluids, water and blankets.
Following these tips can help keep your child's car on the road and give you a little peace of mind.
