Four Leaf Clovers and The Luck of the Irish

St Patrick's Day is almost here and it's time to pull out the shamrocks and go green!!!  Ever wonder why shamrocks/4-Leaf clovers are associated with St Patty's Day?  Here's a little history and some fun facts about the 4-Leaf clover.

During the fifth century, Saint Patrick's mission was to convert many pagan Celts to Christianity and by using the Irish Shamrock, he was able to illustrate the concept of the Holy Trinity.  One leaf represented the Father, one the Son and one the Holy Ghost.  The use of the shamrock was a very successful tool for Saint Patrick and won many hearts to Christianity.

The use of the Shamrock illustration by Saint Patrick resulted in it becoming the symbol of the Catholic underground.  During the 19th century, during prosecution of the Catholics in Ireland, anyone caught wearing a shamrock charm would face a punishment as severe as death!

No longer a symbol of rebellion, the Irish Shamrock have actually become the symbol of Irish Pride.  Many people believe the shamrock will bring good luck to people especially to those lucky enough to find the rare 4-leaf clover!

Here are some fun facts about the 4-leaf clover
  • There are approximately 10,000 3-leaf clovers for every "Lucky" 4-leaf clover.
  • The 4 leaves on the "Lucky" clover are said to represent faith, hope, love and luck.
  • Ireland is home to more 4-leaf clovers than any other place, which is why you hear the term "luck of the Irish."
  • Children in the Middle Ages believed that they could see fairies if they found a 4-Leaf Clover.
  • It is believed that finding a Four Leaf Clover will bring you fame, health, wealth and a faithful relationship.
  • A young clover is considered a shamrock and clovers are in the same family as peas.
