Summer Car Care Tips!

It's the best time of the year at the Lake of the Ozarks! Warmer temperatures mean it's time to get out and enjoy your summer vacation. With airline prices so high lately, a lot of people are opting to drive to their destinations. Road-tripping is definitely a fun way to enhance your vacation experience, but it means that you need to pay extra attention to your vehicle's needs!

The team at Hulett Chevrolet Buick GMC wants to remind you that warmer (and fluctuating) temperatures can be rough on cars and trucks alike. As you plan your summer adventures, don't forget to take care of your vehicle! Here are a few easy ways to make sure your car performs in peak condition this summer.

1. Avoid Sun Damage!
We all hear about trying to monitor the time our skin spends in direct sunlight, but did you know that excessive sun exposure can be just as detrimental to your vehicle? Too much time in the sun can cause paint and interior materials to fade. If you don't have a garage at home, consider installing a simple car port to give your car the protection it needs.

2. Check Your Tires!
You probably hear about how important it is to check your tires all the time, but when is the last time you actually grabbed the gauge? Tire pressure can increase or decrease drastically as the temperatures rise and fall, so it is important to check your pressure at least once a month.

3. Change Your Oil and Oil Filter!
The importance of having fresh (and plenty of) oil in your vehicle cannot be underestimated. For best results, you should check your oil every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever is sooner. You can have the best tires in the country, but you won't be going anywhere if you don't have enough oil!

4. Keep Your Engine Cool!
Now is the time to check your radiator, engine coolant, and cooling system components. Your engine has to work overtime when it's warm outside, and it needs to be kept cool in order to work correctly. The coolant should be replaced periodically, and levels should be checked frequently to make sure your engine has everything it needs to run smoothly. Take a quick glance at the hoses and belts surrounding your engine, too - when they're in good shape, they will be solid and firm.

5. Replace Your Windshield Wipers!
Fluctuating temperatures usually also mean fluctuating weather - it's not uncommon for heavy rainfall to hit suddenly during the summer months! The nearly constant ice and frigid temperatures we had last winter likely caused cracks and tears in the rubber on your windshield wipers. Don't let damaged wipers hinder your visibility!
