5 Tricks To Keep Your Vehicle Running Smoothly

Stop what you're doing and think for a minute. Think about all of the things your car does for you on a daily basis.

Your vehicle takes you to work in the morning, and back home again in the evening. Your vehicle takes you to the grocery store so you can buy food. Your vehicle provides a warm, save way to travel to see friends over the holidays. Your vehicle even takes you cross-country for all your family road trips.

With all of the great things your vehicle does for you, don't you think it would be nice to do something for it in return? Your friends at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC are here to help with these quick tricks for keeping your vehicle running smoothly.

1. Be Gentle
Your car is a fine-tuned machine, with a lot of interworking parts. Driving roughly puts increased strain on these parts and can cause problems for your vehicle. Drive gently by accelerating slowly, anticipating stops so you can brake slowly, and giving your car time to warm up before driving it in extremely cold weather.

2. Don't Skimp On Oil Changes
Having plenty of fresh, high-quality fluids in your vehicle is essential to its overall health. Fluids degrade as you drive, but they also degrade if your car is parked in one place for a long time. The need for fresh oil is the most well-known, but oil is not the only fluid your car needs. Transmission fluid, power-steering fluid, and antifreeze are examples of other fluids that must be refreshed on a regular basis.

3. Get Rid Of Unnecessary Weight
Carrying extra weight is hard on all of us - and our cars. When is the last time you emptied out your trunk? If you're still carting around the cooler from last summer's vacation, it's probably time to do a little reorganizing. Heavy loads put additional strain on your vehicle's braking, suspension, and engine. Unless you're moving or going on a long trip, it's a good idea to keep your car as empty as possible.

4. Limit Short Trips
Most people do not realize this, but short drives (those lasting approximately ten minutes or less) cause extra strain on your vehicle. On short drives, your vehicle's engine does not have time to reach its full temperature. When the engine does not reach full operating temperature, it can't flush the condensed water vapor out of its system. When water stays inside your car's engine, it can dilute your oil and encourage the formation of rust. Next time you're just running up the street, consider grabbing your bicycle or going for a walk instead!

5. Don't Wait For The Problem To Get Worse
This is probably the biggest piece of advice we can offer you. This tip applies to everything - your health, your home, your relationships, and your car. Schedule an appointment with the service department at Hulett as soon as you realize something is wrong. The sooner we begin working to solve your problem, the easier (and probably cheaper) the fix will be.
