It's National Tire Safety Week!

Did you know? This week, May 24th-30th 2015, is National Tire Safety Week. Your friends at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC is here to remind you that keeping your tires in good working condition will not only keep you safe - it can actually save you money at the same time! Are you doing everything you can to make sure your tires are safe and healthy?

Here are a few simple suggestions to improving your vehicle's tire safety:

1. Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated
Underinflated tires can cause your car's handling and gas mileage to worsen. In normal conditions, tires can lose up to one pound per square inch of air every single month, so it is recommended that you check your tire pressure monthly to ensure optimum performance.

Underinflated tires also wear down more quickly and are more likely to need to be replaced sooner. New tires can be expensive, so you will likely want to do everything in your power to prolong your tire's life.

2. Check Your Tire Tread Depth
As tires are used, they are gradually worn down. When tire tread becomes too shallow, it may cause your vehicle to lose traction (especially when driving on wet or slick surfaces). You can manually check your tire tread depth by performing what has unofficially been dubbed "The Penny Test."

To perform the Penny Test, all you have to do is insert a penny headfirst into your tire's treads, with the side that shows Lincoln's head facing towards you. If you can see his head sticking up out of the tread, it has worn down far enough that you may need to consider purchasing new tires.

As a side note, performing this test regularly (even with new tires) can be beneficial because it can also help you recognize any uneven wear that your tires may be experiencing.

3. Rotate Your Tires Regularly
Front tires wear down differently than the back tires do. In order to promote even wear and consequently extend your tire's lifespan, experts recommend that you get your tires rotated every 6,000-8,000 miles. Some people make it easier on themselves by getting a tire rotation every time they get an oil change.

Each of these steps is helpful and important, but performing these checks and simple maintenance measures altogether will greatly improve your tire's safety and performance. By monitoring your tires' tread depth and by keeping your tires inflated and rotated, you will be able to extend your tire's lifespan, improve your vehicle's performance, and protect your family's safety while on the road.
