What Mom Never Told You About Texting And Driving

You've heard parents, newscasters, friends, police officers, activists and countless other individuals warn against the dangers of texting and driving for as long as you can remember. These cautionary messages are important, but are they really leaving a mark on today's drivers?

We are constantly warned of the dangers of texting and driving every single day, yet it continues to be a major factor in Missouri's auto accidents. As the best dealership at the Lake of the Ozarks, we strongly believe in making today's roads a safe place for drivers of all ages. Next time you reach for your phone to send a quick text while you're driving, we hope you'll remember these important considerations.

Texting and Driving - The Stats

As we mentioned, texting and driving continues to be a prominent factor in today's car wrecks - but you don't have to take our word for it. Consider these statistics from The Missouri Department Of Insurance.
  • Drivers who check their phones are (at the very least) three times more likely to be involved in a crash.
  • In 2012, roughly 421,000 people were injured in distracted driving accidents across the nation. (That's more than the entire population of St. Louis!)
  • In Missouri, drivers age 25 and younger account for 30% of all traffic fatalities. (That's the most out of any age group.)
  • Inattentive drivers rank consistently in the top percentage of fatal accidents in Missouri.
  • 80% of car crashes in Missouri involve distracted driving.
It takes the average person five seconds to send a text. If your vehicle is moving at 55 mph, it will travel the length of an entire football field in those short five seconds. Keep that in mind next time you think about reaching for your phone!

Texting and Driving - The Consequences

The accidents caused by texting and distracted driving can be life-threatening, but even if you survive the accident, you can still face serious financial (and potentially legal consequences). The Missouri Department of Insurance sheds some light onto this important (but less frequently discussed) factor.
  • Teen drivers risk being removed from their auto insurance policy if they cause an accident (which means they will no longer be able to drive).
  • The law prohibits drivers age 21 and under from texting and driving. Individuals caught violating this law can get 2 points added to their licenses and may be fined up to $200.
While sending a quick text to your friend or your parents while on the road may seem innocent enough, it can have consequences that will last anywhere from a few years to a lifetime.

Help Us Keep Missouri's Roads Safe!

Missouri does not yet have any laws prohibiting adults from texting and driving, but statistics show that it is just as dangerous for adults to text and drive as it is for teens. In fact, Missouri is one of only six states that does not yet have a law banning text and driving for everyone (and, in some cases, laws strictly prohibiting any form of cell phone usage while driving). While adults may not be breaking any laws by texting on the road in Missouri, the team at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC strongly encourages you to wait until you have safely arrived at your destination before picking up the phone. Together, we can work together to keep Missouri's roads safe for everyone.
