Getting Your Car Ready For Fall

Fall has officially settled into the Lake Area. The temperatures are dropping, the school year is well underway, and the red and orange leaves are getting brighter by the day. Most of you have probably given plenty of thought to your homes and how to prepare them for the cooler weather, but what about your cars? Did you know that they deserve some extra care during the changing seasons, too? The team at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC is here to help you out with these helpful reminders.

1. Check Your Tires.
As hard as it is to believe right now, the fact that it's already fall means that winter is just around the corner. Now is the time to check over your tires and make sure they're still in good condition. Is there still plenty of tread depth? Do they seem to be wearing evenly? If they look like they might need to be replaced, start shopping prices now so that you can them switched out the nasty winter weather hits.

2. Check Your Spare Tire, Too.
For most of us, our spare tires ride along underneath the floor of our trunks or completely underneath our cars - in other words, out of sight and out of mind. When is the last time you pulled out your spare tire and checked to make sure it was still in good condition? At the very least, you will probably need to give it a little more air, as the air pressure in tires tends to slowly decrease over time.

3. Replace Your Air Filter
Months of dry summer heat make the roads incredibly dusty. Dusty roads can clog up your air filter, which makes your system work harder to cool or heat your car. You can test your filter by holding it up in front of a 60-watt light bulb. If you can't see light through it, it needs to be replaced!

4. Check Your Lights.
Unfortunately, the cooler temperatures also mean shorter daylight hours. As the days get shorter and shorter, drivers will be spending more and more time on the road after dark. Help ensure your safety by making sure all of your lights are working correctly and shining brightly.

5. Inspect Your Wiper Blades.
Keeping your wipe blades in good condition is a crucial step to maintaining visibility while you're on the road. Most drivers end up using their windshield wipers more frequently in the fall and winter months, so now is the perfect time to critically evaluate your wipe blades for maximum effectiveness.

6. Check Your Battery.
Did you know that your battery has to be fully charged in order to start in cold weather? A healthy battery recharges itself as you drive, but old batteries can lose their charge while parked. Take a peek under your hood and give your battery a once-over. If you see any signs of corrosion, you may need to have it replaced - or at the very least, professionally checked.

7. Top Off Your Fluids.
At the start of every season, you should always take a few minutes to check all of your fluid levels - specifically your brake fluid, engine oil, coolant, and windshield wiper fluid. If you have to top any of it off, make sure you include the proper amount of antifreeze to make sure it doesn't turn to ice when the really cold weather hits.
