4 Reasons To Change Your Engine Oil Regularly

If you drive a car, you've probably heard that you're supposed to change your oil regularly hundreds of times. Car dealerships at the Lake of the Ozarks (and everywhere else) send service reminders in the mail, your mom and dad reminds you every so often, and the topic comes up anytime anyone talks about car maintenance. There's a reason that oil changes are talked about so frequently - they are absolutely essential to a vehicle's performance and longevity.

Traditionally, car maintenance experts recommended that all vehicles change their oil about every 3,000 miles. Today's vehicles are so widely diversified, however, that we encourage each car owner to consult their owner's manual to identify how frequently their vehicle's oil needs to be changed.

4 Reasons To Change Your Engine Oil Regularly

1. Engine Performance
The interworking parts of your vehicle's engine are actually extremely close together - sometimes as little as 0.0010". It relies on the oil to lubricate the moving parts and prevent the heat and friction from breaking the parts down. However, the heat from the engine eventually breaks down the oil on a molecular level. It needs to be changed regularly in order to provide the lubrication the engine needs.

2. Engine Debris
As car engines run their normal course, small shavings from the engine, anti-freeze, dust, and other debris build up in the oil. The debris eventually settles into the bottom of the oil pan and congeals with the oil, forming a nasty sludge. If not removed, this sludge can end up sticking to engine parts and causing additional wear. Flushing the oil will remove this sludge before it has the chance to do any damage.

3. Condensation
When a car's engine remains cool for an extended period of time (such as when it sits unused or is only used for very short drives), condensation can build up in the engine. At a certain point this condensation can fall back into the oil pan and contaminate the oil. For this reason, experts recommend changing the oil more frequently (as often as every 1,000 miles or 12 months) for vehicles that are driven very little.

4. Clogged Filters
The oil filter works to prevent debris and other contaminants that may have built up in the oil from entering the engine. Once the filter becomes clogged, the overall amount of oil that passes through the filter and into the engine will be limited. This means that the engine won't get the engine that it needs to function properly. Oil filters are cheap and easy to replace, so many technicians recommend changing the filter every time you change the oil.
