Safe Driving Reminders For Memorial Day Weekend

Roadways are busier over Memorial Day Weekend than almost any other time of the year. Hundreds of thousands of individuals travel many miles for any number of different reasons – visiting family, reconnecting with friends, or going on vacation. With so many people on the road, it’s more important than ever to be proactive and exercise all of your defensive driving skills. Your friends at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC are here to help you stay safe on the roads this weekend with these important safety reminders.

1. Leave Plenty Of Space Between You And The Car In Front Of You
Tailgating is one of the worst traits drivers can exhibit on the road. Not only is it incredibly annoying for the driver in front, it is also very dangerous for all vehicles involved. If you are driving too closely behind the car in front of you, you may not have adequate time to stop before rear-ending the car in front if they have to stop suddenly.

2. Check Your Tire Pressure
Remember that it's the air inside the tires that carry the weight of your vehicles and your passengers, not the tires themselves. Under-inflated tires may get poorer gas mileage, wear down prematurely, and suffer greater damage from driving over uneven or rough roads. Before heading out for your Memorial Day road trip (especially if you are going on a longer journey), take a few moments to check your tire pressure and add air to them if necessary.

3. Do The Penny Test
Are you familiar with the "penny test"? This quick and easy test is a great way to check and see if your tire tread is worn down far enough to warrant being replaced. If your tire tread gets worn too shallow, your tires may not get the traction needed to keep you safe on the road. Here's how to perform the penny test in a few easy steps:
  1. Hold a penny in your hand so that Lincoln's body is between your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Find a place on your tire that appears to be worn the thinnest, and insert the penny (Lincoln's head first) into the grooves.
  3. If any part of Abraham Lincoln's head is covered by the tread, you are still driving within the safe (and legal) tire tread depth limit. If the head is uncovered, it is time to replace your tires.

4. Make The Driver's Seat A Distraction-Free Zone
Drivers are subject to countless distractions on the road, especially if they are traveling with children or animals in the car. The radio station needs to be changed, the children need snacks, the destination needs to be updated in the GPS... the list goes on and on. Designate a co-pilot in the passenger seat to handle any of these tasks as the need arises so that the driver can keep his or her attention on the road.
