7 Summer Vehicle Maintenance Reminders

Summer is in full swing at the Lake of the Ozarks. Blistering hot temperatures, rapid unexpected rainfall, and abundant sunshine are the norm these days. Summer at the Lake is filled with outstanding events, exciting road trips, and relaxing days on the water. While these fun-filled activities should take up the majority of your time, there are still several little details that need attention during the hotter months.

Here at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC, we are dedicated to helping our customers plan (and enjoy!) the best summer ever. Part of this effort involves helping our clients ward off any potential car trouble so that they will be free to enjoy all of the great things they have planned. Here are a few summer car care tips to help you do just that.

7 Summer Maintenance Reminders

1. Replace Your Cabin Air Filter
Just like the HVAC system in your home, your vehicle's air conditioning system includes a filter to remove unwanted particles from the air. If this filter becomes dirty or clogged, your engine will have to work harder to push air through it. During the peak summer heat, it's important to change this filter regularly.

2. Check Your Brakes
Your brakes are arguably your vehicle's most critical safety feature. Play close attention to your brakes this summer and get them inspected if you notice any of the following warning signs: your brake pedal becoming too hard, your brake pedal becoming too soft, or unusual sounds while braking.

3. Change Your Oil
Like all engines, your vehicle's engine needs to be lubricated in order to function smoothly and effectively. Consult your owner's manual to determine how frequently you should change your oil (most manuals recommend every 3,000-5,000 miles, depending on your oil type). If you consistently take short trips, tow heavy loads, or carry a lot of cargo, it is especially important that you change your oil frequently.

4. Replace Your Windshield Wipers
Summer is famous for hot temperatures and abundant sunshine, but it is also notorious for quick, heavy rainfalls that seemingly appear out of nowhere. Worn windshield wipers may not be able to clear water from the windshield, resulting in poorer visibility and greater risk for drivers on the road. If you have not replaced your windshield wipers recently, consider doing so.

5. Keep Coolant Levels Full
It's especially critical to ensure that your engine doesn't overheat. The condition, concentration, and level of your coolant should be checked periodically to ensure all is well. Most experts recommend using a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water as your engine coolant. If you are changing your coolant levels yourself, always remember to let your engine cool completely before removing the radiator cap.

6. Rotate Your Tires
This particular maintenance tips is important year-round, not just in summer. In order to promote even wear and increase the lifespan of your tires, it's important to rotate them consistently. Most experts recommend rotating them every 5,000 miles, or every other time you change your oil.

7. Check Your Tire Pressure
Temperatures tend to fluctuate rather drastically in the summer, climbing to almost 100°F in the day and dropping into the 70's at night. Air expands and contracts as temperatures rise and fall, so it's important to check your tire pressure regularly during the summer to ensure that they're holding at an appropriate level. Tires that are not properly inflated tend to wear down faster and can contribute to reduced fuel economy.
