4 Steps To Reduce Your Blind Spot

With more and more new vehicles coming equipped with blind spot detection, no one really needs to worry about reducing their blind spot… right? Wrong. Although this technology can help make the roadways a safer place to travel, it's still a good idea to be able to physically see if there is a car next to you before changing lanes. Your trusted car dealer in Mid-MO has provided some helpful steps to take in order to reduce your blind spot, helping to make the roadway a little safer for everyone.

A blind spot is a point where a person’s view is obstructed. Typically used when referring to a vehicle, a blind spot is a place in which a passing car “disappears.” Blind spots can cause a number of accidents on the roadways. A driver may change lanes thinking that no other vehicle is around when in reality there is a car in their blind spot, which can cause a collision. Taking these steps to reduce a driver’s blind spot can aid in successful passing on the road.

1) Rear-View Mirror

The first step to reducing a blind spot starts with the rear-view mirror. Ensure this mirror is positioned so the driver can see straight out the back window. A driver should be able to see directly out the rear window by moving their eyes toward the mirror, no head moment should take place when looking out the rear-view. There is no need to tilt the rear-view mirror to one side or the other, it is used for just that, the rear view.

2) Left Mirror

Next, the driver should lean their head so that it is almost touching the driver side window. From this vantage point, adjust the mirror until the edge of the vehicle is in view.

3) Right Mirror

After the driver side mirror is in place, lean toward the passenger side window, so the driver’s head is in the middle of the vehicle. From here, the driver should adjust the passenger side mirror so the side of the car is just barely in view.

4) Check Your Work

Ensure your blind spots are visible by paying attention as a car passes on the left of the vehicle. When it is safe to do so, check your right side blind spot by passing a slower car. A driver should be able to see a vehicle in their rear-view mirror and follow it while it passes by using all of the mirrors.
