Tips For Maintaining Your Car This Fall

Fall is just around the corner, and it is the perfect time to make sure your car is in tip-top shape before the cold winter months. Maintaining your car is the key to keeping it dependable and on the road longer. Your midwest car dealership wants you to stay safe while on the road this season. Although it isn't the busiest travel season, the changing season leaves room for accidents while driving. Check out these tips to maintaining your vehicle this fall:

1. Check Heater, Defroster and Wiper Blades

Make sure that your HVAC system is working properly. Not just for comfort, but for safety reason as well, as defrosting is important during the fall and winter season. While checking your HVAC system, it is a good idea to check your air filters and change them if necessary. Make sure that your wiper blades are not cracked or torn, if so, they should be replaced, as to not cause safety issues.

2. Maintain Battery

Keep the battery connections clean, tight and corrosion-free. It is a good idea to check the battery and charging system, as cold weather is hard on batteries. If your battery is more than three years old, it might be time to replace it, as batteries don't always give warning signs before they fail.

3. Check The Tires

Make sure there is the right amount of air in your tires and that the tread is not worn. If there is uneven wear, you may need a wheel alignment. During the colder seasons, tire pressure should be checked regularly, as tires lose pressure when the temperatures drop.

4. Check Brakes

Brakes are an important part of vehicle safety, especially in the cold season, as snow and ice affect road conditions. Make sure your brake system is in proper working condition by checking the brake lining, rotors and drums.

5. Proper Fuel Levels

To prevent freezing and to keep moisture from forming in the gas line, keep your gas tank at least half full through the colder season. It is also important to stay on top of the oil levels and to be diligent about changing it at proper intervals, as dirty oil can cause issues in the fall and winter months. Make sure that you check the oil and fuel filters and change them as necessary.
