Spring Tire Maintenance - 3 Important Things To Check

As winter turns into spring, it's important to make sure your vehicle is properly maintained. One thing that should be checked with the change of season is your tires. Tires are an important part of any vehicle, as they are what allows your car to roll down the road. If there are any issues with them and it could make for a bump, and possibly dangerous, ride. Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC has three important things that need to be examined with spring on the horizon.

1. Tread Depth

Tread depth is essential to the performance of your tires. Proper tread depth helps prevent hydroplaning during the spring rain, as well as give your vehicle solid traction on the road in case of any adverse weather condition, such as sleet, hail or snow. If your tire tread is worn down to below 1/16 of an inch, it's time for new tires. You can use a penny or quarter to measure the depth in your tires. On a quarter, if George Washington's head is fully showing after it has been inserted into the tire upside down, the tread is too shallow.

2. Wear & Tear

It's normal for your tires to wear over time when you drive, but if you are noticing that certain areas are more worn than other, something else may be wrong. Uneven wear can come from a variety of causes, such as under-/overinflated tires, improper wheel alignment, damaged suspension, or improper toe setting (the direction the tires point in relation to the centerline of the vehicle). If you are noticing any of these issues, it's best to take your car to an auto service department at the Lake of the Ozarks. Uneven wear can reduce the life of your tires, or can cause your tires to blow out while driving.

3. Pressure

With the change in season, it's important to ensure your tires have the proper amount of air. As discussed earlier, if they're under- or overinflated, your tires will suffer, as well as your gas mileage and it can even affect how your vehicle maneuvers. However, your tires shouldn't just be checked seasonally. Tire pressure should be checked fairly often. When you maintain proper tire pressure, you'll ensure better fuel economy in your vehicle, and make your car, truck or SUV much safer for your family.

Your safety is our number one priority at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC, and during the rainy spring season, your tires play an important role in your driving safety.
