3 Myths About Stick Shifts

When you decide it's time for a new vehicle, you need to figure out if you want an automatic or a manual transmission. There are definitely pros and cons to each. However, there are a few pros about the manual transmission that may not necessarily be true. Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC takes a look at clarify three popular myths about manual transmissions.

1. Better Fuel Economy

In years past, it was almost always true that manual transmissions would be more fuel efficient than an automatic transmission. However, as automatic vehicles become more advanced and gain additional gears, they're now just as fuel efficient as manual transmissions and sometimes even get better gas mileage. However, if you do a lot of city driving, a manual car may still get better gas mileage than automatics, as stop and go traffic uses more energy for automatic transmissions. It's best to do the research ahead of time on a certain vehicle to give you the most definitive answer.

2. Cost Less Than Automatics

In most cases, the manual version of a car will cost less, however, it's not always that way. Sometimes, the manual version cost just as much as the automatic. It all depends on the type of vehicle you are look at buying and how much it costs to build and how much it costs for the warranty of the vehicle. For sports cars, manual and automatic (if available) tend to cost about the same, as they are both expensive cars to build. For sedans, manuals tend to be cheaper, as the automatic transmission is more complex and more expensive to build than the manual transmission.

3. Easier To Maintain

This one is sort of true, however, it all depends on your driving style. Manual transmissions are usually cheaper to maintain and repair than automatics because they are less complicated and have fewer parts that can fail. An automatic has hundreds of mechanical, hydraulic and electronic parts that have to work in harmony to shift gears smoothly for you. In a manual, the transmission is mostly mechanical gears that rely on the driver to engage the clutch and shift when needed. Repairs on manual transmissions usually don't cost as much as automatic, however, repair costs vary on the vehicle and what it needs. In the end, if you burn through clutches rapidly because of your driving style, you could end up spending more on repairs and replacements than you would if you went with an automatic.
