Improve Your Fuel Economy This Summer

Between summer vacations, road trips, holiday weekends and day adventures, many people put a lot of mileage of their vehicles during this season, which can add up to a lot of money spent on gas over the summertime. While some vehicles innately get better gas mileage than others, there are a few things you can do to help improve your fuel economy.

Most people tend to notice that their fuel economy lowers a bit during the summer, and this could be because the air conditioning uses extra gas. With that in mind, here are a few tips you could do to help save gas while still keeping your vehicle at a tolerable temperature.

- When traveling at slower speeds, roll down your windows and use the breeze instead of the air conditioning. Use the AC when traveling at highway speeds.
- When you first get in the car, drive with your windows down to air out the cabin before turning on your air conditioning. (Don't start using the AC while the car is idling.)
- Use a sunshade or park your vehicle in the shade/garage to prevent it from getting extra hot when not in use.
- Only use the air conditioning to cool as much as you need - don't make the cabin cooler than necessary.

General Fuel Economy Tips

The above suggestions are great ways to help improve your fuel economy in the summer specifically, but there are other year-round strategies that can also be helpful in the summer:

- Keep your tires properly inflated.
- Avoid weighing your vehicle down with extra cargo.
- Change your oil and air filter regularly.
- Drive gently - avoid accelerating or decelerating quickly.
- Run all your errands at the same time instead of taking multiple smaller trips.
