Traffic Violations That Are Too Common

We’ve all seen them – the drivers who aren’t paying enough attention while driving, the drivers who speed up when lights turn yellow, or the drivers who follow a little too closely behind the car in front of them. If we are going to be completely honest, we all probably have been that driver at one point or another. Some traffic violations have become so common that we forget that they are just that, violations. Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC wants everyone to be safe on the road at all times. The best car dealership in Lake of the Ozarks is taking a closer look at some of the most common traffic violations across the country.

Most Common Traffic Violations

Not Wearing a Seatbelt

There are reasons cars are equipped with seatbelts. They are here to keep you safe and prevent life-threatening injuries in the event of an accident. Make sure you buckle up every time you are in the car.

Not Using Your Turn Signal

Just like seatbelts, cars are equipped with turn signals so people know when you are turning. While it’s tempting to switch lanes without using your turn signal, you can still get a ticket. Other drivers that are on the road cannot read your mind, whether you are switching lanes or turning, the only way to let them know is to use your turn signal. Not using your turn signal can cause you to get rear-ended or side swept by another car.

Driving on the Shoulder

The shoulder is there for emergency vehicles and emergencies. The shoulder allows emergency vehicles to safely get through traffic and to pass other vehicles. It also gives a safe spot for vehicles that are broken down to pull over and get out of traffic.

Texting

While you may feel like sending a quick text is harmless, the truth is, taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds can have deadly consequences. You may be the best at multitasking, sending a text is not worth it.

Speeding

Speeding is one of the most common violations. Many people around the country drive above the speed limit, especially on highways and freeways. Depending on the speed limit and how fast you’re going, you may have to pay fines up to $500 and you may have points added to your license, or you’ll have to go to traffic school. Speed limits are set to make each road as safe and efficient as possible. While people may view speed limits as a suggestion, it’s best to just follow the posted speed limit.

Running a Stop Sign or Red Light

You don’t have to blatantly roll through a stop sign or red light. Regardless of whether or not there are cars around, you must still come to a complete stop when at a stop sign or red light. A good rule of thumb to go by is to stop for three full seconds at a stop sign. That same rule works for stopping at a red light before turning right.

Following Too Closely

You should always allow a safe following distance between you and other cars, especially in the rain because you will need more time to slow down or come to a stop. You can be ticketed for tailgating or following another car too closely. You should try to leave a distance of two to three car lengths between you and the car in front of you.
