Summer Driving Tips 2019

Schools are letting out, summer plans are made, and vacations are in full swing.  Summer is by far the most popular time of year for people to get out and travel the countryside, but with summer comes heat, thunderstorms, and lots of miles. Check Your Tires

Think about this- the only part of your car that touches the pavement and keeps you on the road are your tires. They are a vital part of any successful trip- whether it be to the grocery store, or across state lines.  It’s extremely important to keep an eye on the tread depth, pressure, and wear since they can tell you a lot about your car.  Keeping your tires properly inflated to the correct psi can improve tire performance, as well as extend the life and give you better fuel economy.  If you notice uneven wear, it’s possible that you could need an alignment.

A/C System 

Check the operation of your air conditioning.  The last thing you want with a car full of kids is for your a/c to not to work properly.  If there seems to be an issue with your air conditioner, get it checked out now before it quits at the most inopportune time.  *It’s a good idea to keep some bottled water in your car for long road trips- just in case!

Cooling System

You also need to check your cooling system. Check the level of the antifreeze and look for any obvious signs of leaks.  If you notice the coolant level is lower than it should be, but there are no signs of a leak such as antifreeze on the motor, you should have your car looked at quickly.  It could be a sign of a major issue. In the summer heat, your vehicles coolant system needs to be operating at its peak.

Wiper Blades

This may seem like a small item, but getting caught out in a thunderstorm with bad wiper blades is no small circumstance.  Bad wiper blades could lead to a safety concern for you and your passengers, as well as other drivers on the road.  Make sure to look them over and evaluate how well they clear your windshield before you head out of town, and replace them immediately if they show any signs of wear & tear!

Safety Kit

Now is a good time to put a safety kit together with some essential items in case of trouble. Get a duffle bag and load it up with jumper cables, road flares, flashlights (and batteries!), a first aid kit, towels, water bottles and any other items you think you might need in the event of a breakdown or accident. This is also a good time to make sure your spare tire is inflated, and the jack and tire tools are all in the car.

Check for Recalls

Recalls are common and all too often ignored. Before you take off and head across the country, check and see if your vehicle has any open recalls. This is an easy task to check off your list and could save you from a potentially bad situation.
