Driving Safety Tips to Keep Top of Mind for the Holiday Weekend

Fourth of July Weekend is here and it's a popular weekend for traveling. The extended weekend offers the opportunity for many to plan a road trip. Our car dealership at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to prepare for a weekend of travels. Hulett Chevrolet Buick GMC is pointing out some important driving safety tips that you should keep top of mind as you head out on a road trip this weekend. Check it out:

Put the Phone Away

Distracted driving is a top cause of car accidents on the roadway. Keep you and others on the roadway safe by leaving your phone down. You may think a quick text is harmless but it can actually turn into a life-changing experience in a split second. It's best to have your passenger assist with any communication on your phone or simply leave your phone down & avoid taking your eyes off the screen.

Pay Attention to Other Drivers on the Road

Driving on the defense is important while traveling, especially on a busy weekend. While traveling down the road, try to think of how you would react if the roadway conditions expectantly changed. This mindset can help you prepare for your driving reaction, if you should need to make a sudden change.

Keep a Safe Following Distance

It's important that you allow enough distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. It's recommended to leave 1 car length between vehicles for every 10 mph you're traveling. For example, if you're going 60 mph, leave the distance of 6 cars between your vehicle and the one in front. This allows adequate stopping distance and gives you extra reaction time, if needed.

Obey the Speed Limit

Speed limits are the law and it's important to respect those speed limits. Traveling the speed limit makes safer driving conditions for everyone on the road. Keep an eye on speed and if you're traveling on two-lane roads, pay attention to any changes in speed limits, especially as you approach smaller towns along the way.

Always Wear Your Seat Belt

Buckle your seat belt every time you put the vehicle in drive. It's also important to make sure everyone in your vehicle is wearing their seat belt, as well. This keeps everyone in your vehicle safe and secure. Click it or ticket -- it's the law!
