Stay Safe While Traveling This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is next week and many people are gearing up to hit the road to spend the holiday with their loved ones. Last year, an estimated 46.6 million peopled traveled 50 or more miles for Thanksgiving according to AAA. With so many people on the road, it is important to stay alert and safe while getting to your destination. Your auto dealership at the Lake of the Ozarks created a checklist for you to go through to make sure you have everything in order to make your journey smoother.

1. Wiper Blades

Before heading out on the road, check to make sure that your wiper blades are not worn out. Whether it is raining or snowing, having good wiper blades will ensure you have a clear windshield while driving. If they are torn, it could damage your windshield, leaving you with poor viability.

2. Heater & Defroster

If you are driving a long distance or to an area known for inclement weather, make sure that everything is working properly, including your heater and defroster. If you get caught in snow, you will want to make sure that you are able to see the road.

3. Tires

It is important to check the tire pressure and thread before taking off on a long trip. Driving on improperly inflated tires could leave you with a flat later in the journey. Having low tire tread could also lead to a dangerous situation, especially if it starts to snow or rain, as you will not have enough traction.

4. Fluid Levels

Before taking off, check to make sure all fluid are at the proper level including break, oil, windshield and transmission. If either of these are not at the right level, you could run into some issues while on the road.

5. Lights

If you plan to do any night driving this holiday season, double check to make sure all of your lights are working properly. If you run into snow during your journey, make sure you clear your headlights each time you take off.

6. Load Car Safely

If you are bringing luggage with you, make sure you check your car's weight limits and load your car properly so all windows are still visible. Don't forget to check the load range for your tires as well, as this is a common cause for roadside blowouts.

7. Watch The Weather

Bad weather can delay a holiday or create difficulties getting home. Keep an eye out on weather reports and make sure you have everything you need in case you get caught in a storm.

8. Fuel Up Before You Go

The last thing you want to happen on your trip is run out of gas. Sometimes gas stations can be hard to come by between towns and cities, so plan ahead. Fill up the day before you take off and mark where gas stations will be along your route, especially if you plan on taking back roads.

Travel Safe This Thanksgiving!

Many people are traveling this weekend and throughout the week. If you are one of them, please stay safe while out on the road. Although we are having nice weather at the Lake of the Ozarks, there are many other states that are experiencing snow storms, so be prepared.
