Windshield Maintenance Tips For The Winter

When people think of fall or winter car maintenance, they usually think about buying snow tires or flushing the radiator. However, the risk of getting a cracked windshield increases during the colder season. With the nighttime temperatures starting to drop, it is time to start thinking about the windshield on your car. Your Lake of the Ozarks car dealership offers a few winter car care tips to help protect your windshield during the colder months.

- Avoid drastic temperature changes. Sudden temperature changes can lead to your car's windshield cracking. Don't use hot or boiling water to defrost your windshield. In addition, do not blast the heater to warm up the car. Instead, turn on the defroster and let the windshield and car warm up slowly.

- Use an ice scraper to remove ice. Using anything other than a plastic ice scraper can scratch or chip your windshield. Plastic ice scrapers are cheap and can easily be found in stores around this time of the year. You can also use a de-icer to melt the ice on your windshield, so you may not even need to us ea scraper!

- Regularly clean the glass. Running the wipers or scraping ice over a dirty window is a common cause of windshield scratches. Use glass cleaner and a soft cloth to clean dirt and grime off of your windshield. If you keep your windshield clean, not only can you avoid scratching it when you use your wipers or ice scraper, but you can also easily spot cracks and chips.

- Replace old wiper blades. Wiper blades that are worn out expose the glass to the metal or plastic clips. If you run the blades in this condition, it can severely scratch the glass. In addition, old wiper blades do not clear away rain or snow as well as new ones, which makes it more dangerous to drive in bad weather.

- Get chips repaired. It is important to get chips repaired as early as possible, as old chips and cracks are harder to fill and repair. In addition, leaving chips unrepaired in the winter months can cause them to grow. Sudden temperature changes can cause a small chip to crack. Once your windshield cracks, it can no longer get filled and you will now have to replace your entire windshield.
