7 Tips For Teen Drivers (& Their Parents)

Being a teen can be hard sometimes, but one of the best parts about being a young adult is getting your license! However, there are a lot of responsibilities that come with passing the driving test. Because of the lack of experience on the road, new drivers are at a higher risk for fatal crashes. At Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC, safety is our number one concern, so here are 7 tips new drivers should keep in mind while on the road to keep them safe.

1. Remember to buckle up ALWAYS. Not only is it the law to buckle up, but seat belts have been proven to save lives. However, the message is not getting through to young adults. According to the DMV, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15 - 20-year-olds in the United States, and the majority of these deaths involve unbuckled teens, drivers and passengers.

2. Put the phone down. According to AAA, 94 percent of teen drivers know the dangers of texting and drivers, however, 35 percent admit to doing it anyways. 21 percent of teen drivers involved in fatal accidents were using their cell phones. It's better to be safe than sorry - so put the phone out of reach and put it on vibrate.

3. Take things slow. Teen drivers just have a need for speed, but when you have a lead foot, it can make things a lot more dangerous. If you crash while speeding, it can make personal injuries far worse, and you are more likely to not survive the crash. In addition, speeding was a contributing factor in more than 30 percent of all fatal crashes.

4. Don't drink and drive. While young drivers are less likely to get behind the wheel after drinking. When they do, their crash risk is significantly higher due to the alcohol effects combined with the lack of driving experience.

5. Watch the weather. During inclement weather, it's even more dangerous for young drivers to be on the road due to their inexperience handling a vehicle in those situations. It's important that they feel comfortable behind the wheel first, then teach them how to confidently handle weather challenges.

6. Limit the number of passengers. Fatal crash risks are higher with more passengers in the vehicle. With three or more, the fatal crash risk is about four times higher than when a beginner drives alone. Studies also show that they're more likely to take risks and be distracted. Not to mention, when things go wrong, the tragedy is multiplied.

7. Drive the right vehicle. Many parents buy their teens inexpensive, old cars or pass on an old vehicle that's well past its prime. However, those vehicles may not have the latest safety features that are especially important for new drivers. At Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC, we can help you find a reliable and affordable used or new vehicle for your teen. We know you want to keep your teen safe on the road.
