Tips For Traveling With Pets

Summer is the perfect opportunity for road trips! The weather is beautiful, there are fun things to explore over the United States and kids are out of school making it easy to find time to take a vacation. If you want to include your furry friends in your adventures, Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC has a few tips to keep in mind.

Get Your Pet Ready

If your pet is not used to car rides or has never been on a car ride before, it's best to get them acquainted with it by taking it on a series of short drives. Over time, begin to lengthen the time spent in the car. If you're traveling across state lines, bring along your pet's shot records with you. While this generally isn't a problem, some states require proof of rabies at interstate crossings.

Keep Pets Secured

Keep your pets secured while in the car not only for their safety but for yours as well. Having your pet wander the car can be dangerous, as they could distract you. In addition, if you suddenly break, it can keep them from sliding around. Keep them secured in a well-ventilated crate or carrier or keep them in a harness that's attached to a seat belt.

Pack A Bag For Your Pet

In addition to packing a bag for yourself, you need to make sure your pet has everything ready for their trip. Bring enough food, a bowl for water, their leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, any medication they need, a first-aid kit and any travel documents. Don't forget to pack their favorite toy, pillow or blanket to give your pet a sense of familiarity. Be sure to pack plenty of fresh water, as drinking water from an area they're not used to could lead to an upset stomach. In addition, avoid feeding your pet in a moving vehicle, and give them enough time between feedings before hopping into back into the car.

Don't Leave Your Pet In The Vehicle Alone

Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked vehicle could turn into a furnace in no time. If they're left in a hot vehicle, heat stroke could develop, and in worse case scenario, could lead to death. To learn more about the dangers of leaving your pet in a parked vehicle, read our blog.

While we never hope for the worst while on vacation, it's important to be prepared, so in addition to these tips, also make sure you research animal hospitals and vets in the areas you will be traveling in. When done properly, pets can be great travel companions on road trips. They would love to get out and explore new areas just like we do. However, we want to ensure their safety (and ours) while on road trips to make sure we have the best possible time.
