National Stop on Red Week

August 5-11, 2018 is National Stop on Red Week! Organized by the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR), this campaign is meant to raise awareness about the dangers of red-light running. Innocent lives are lost every day because drivers recklessly decide to run red lights. Keep reading to learn more about the dangers of red-light running. Hulett Chevrolet Buick GMC wants to help raise awareness about this issue. Not only do we want to get you into a new car at the Lake of the Ozarks, but we want you to be safe on the roads in that car!

Red-Light Running Stats

According to data from the NHTSA, 37,461 lives were lost on U.S. roads in 2016. That's up 5.6% compared to 2015. Between 2004 and 2016, an estimated 10,111 people were killed in crashes related to red-light running. In 2016 alone:

  • 808 people were killed due to red-light running.
  • 137,000 people were injured due to red-light running.
These numbers illustrate the danger of red-light running. Lives were cut too short, and family and friends left too soon. The harsh reality is that red-light running can affect anyone on the roadways if more action isn't taken to prevent reckless driving.

The 2017 AAA Foundation Traffic Safety Culture Index Report found that:
  • 42.7% of drivers admitted to driving through a stoplight that has just turned red when they could have stopped safely in the past 30 days.
  • More than 1 in 4 drivers admitted running a red light more than once, and 5% reported doing it fairly often or regularly.
  • An overwhelmingly majority of drivers, 91.4%, perceive running red lights as a serious or somewhat serious threat to their personal safety.
  • 59.1% of drivers support using red-light safety cameras to automatically ticket drivers who run red lights on residential streets.
As of 2018, 421 communities have red-light camera programs.

Red-Light Running Trends

New research is rapidly emerging about the behaviors of red-light runners. Let's take a look at some of the trends from 2017:
  • More than 3,885,000 Million drivers ran red lights in 2017.
  • In 2017, more people ran red lights in October than any other month.
  • Over 620K people ran red lights on Friday, making it the deadliest day for red-light running in 2017.
  • More than 1.1 million red-light running violations occurred from 1-5 pm in 2017.
  • Memorial Day Weekend is still the highest ranked holiday travel period with nearly 41,000 in 2017. Independence Day and Labor Day are up there as well.

More Reasons to Stop on Red

Road safety is the responsibility of every driver, each and every time they get behind the wheel - and intersection safety is an extremely important aspect of road safety.

  • Red-light running can be fatal.
  • The most common type of urban crash involved drivers who run red lights, stop signs and other traffic controls.
  • More than half of the deaths in red-light running crashes are pedestrians, bicyclists and occupants in vehicles other than the vehicle running the red light.
  • 1 in 3 Americans know someone who has been injured or killed in a red-light running crash.
  • On average, 2 people died each day in red-light running crashes in the United States in 2016.
  • The leading cause of death for U.S. teens is motor vehicle crashes.
By working together, we can put an end to red-light running. #StopOnRed2018
