5 Things you need to know About Traveling with your Pet!!

It's getting close to that time of year when we head out for our spring break getaway and our summer vacations!!   If you have plans of taking your furry little friends along, you will want to make the trip a good adventure for both you and your pet.  

 Here are a few tips that might make you travel time smoother!!
  1. Consult your Vet before traveling - it's always a good idea to make sure your pet is in good health to make the trip!   Your vet can make sure you vaccinations are up to date, prescribe any necessary medicines and give you a clean bill of health for travel.  
  2. Pack plenty of treats and a combination of new and old toys.  You wouldn't dare go on long trip without bringing your book, ipad or other gadgets to occupy yourself and your pets should be no different.  The toys and treats will keep them occupied and make the drive much more enjoyable.
  3. Crate or Leash your pet.  Dogs and cats would love to have the entire vehicle at their disposal - but for the safety of your pet, please either put them in their crate or use a leash in the backseat.  Either way, be sure to put their favorite blanket with them for added security and comfort
  4. Bathroom Breaks.   Hopefully, you will have an accident free trip - but more than likely, your pet will have an accident.  Be prepared. Use rubber car mats or pads inside your carrier/crate.  Also consider using a covered litter box for your cat in the back seat floor.  Most importantly, be sure to take your "cleaning" supplies in case you need to clean up any messes along the way!
  5. Light Snacks only!  Be mindful of your pets "bathroom" schedule - do not feed your pet a large portion of food before hitting the road.   Instead offer them a light snack and water 4-5 hours before departure and light snacks along the drive if needed.
