5 Winter Health Tips For Your Car

This may sound weird, but have you ever stopped to think about how much your car is like a person? Both you and your car need energy and exercise, and you both probably hate these extremely cold temperatures! Just like you spend a little extra time preparing for the harsh cold, your car needs a little extra attention during the winter months.

As your trusted dealership at the Lake of the Ozarks, the team at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC is here to remind you about these important winter health tips for your car.

1. Stay Hydrated
We all know how important it is for us to stay hydrated, but did you know that it is just as crucial for your vehicle as it is for you? Having enough antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and oil in your vehicle is always important, but it is especially crucial during the winter months. You can check your fluid levels yourself, or the service department at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC can help you out. If you hire a professional to change your oil, they should check your other fluids as well and top anything off as needed.

2. Get Your Eyes Checked
Good visibility is one of the most critical aspects of safe driving, but it can be especially hard to maintain good visibility during the winter months. Snow, sleet, and deicing materials all have a way of caking against the windshield, making it very difficult to see. Protect your visibility by replacing your windshield wipers (if necessary) and making sure you have plenty of windshield wiper fluid. You may event want to consider swapping your standard wipers out for special winter windshield wipers.

3. Stay Calm Under Pressure
We've all been in situations where the pressure is either too great or too weak - neither one is very pleasant. The same thing goes for the tire pressure in your car. If the pressure is too great or too weak, it will put unnecessary strain on your tires. It's especially important to check your tire pressure frequently during Missouri's unpredictable winter months, as fluctuating temperatures can alter your tire pressure. Cold temperatures can cause your tire pressure to drop dramatically.

4. Stretch Before Exercising
It's a bad idea to jump straight into vigorous exercise without giving your body a chance to warm up first. Similarly, it's important to let your car's engine warm up before asking it to do anything too strenuous. When your car has been sitting in extremely cold temperatures for a while, it's a good idea to let the engine idle for a few minutes (just one-two) before driving. You can also drive at slower speeds for the first few minutes to give your engine a chance to warm up. After a proper warm-up period, your car will deliver a much better performance.

5. Stay Clean
Would you go all winter without bathing? No, of course you wouldn't - so why should you car? Washing your car regularly during the winter can help keep the salt and other grime from solidifying on your car and hurting your paint job. Try to time your washes to hit the days when the temperatures are above freezing, though, so your car doesn't become a giant block of ice after the wash!

If you give your car the care and attention that it needs, it will, in turn, take much better care of you during the cold winter months.
