Teaching Your Teen To Drive - 4 Tips

Can you believe it? Summer has passed, temperatures are dropping, and the Lake of the Ozarks school year has officially started. With the morning and afternoon roads filled with young drivers on their way to/from school, the team at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC is here to remind you how important it is to make sure your teen is a safe, competent driver. To aid in this process, we've compiled a few stats on teen driving accidents and some tried-and-true tricks for making sure your teen does not become a part of these statistics.

The Stats On Teen Drivers

  • Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for teens ages 15-20. (Insurance Information Institute)
  • 16-year-olds are more likely to be in an accident than drivers of any other age. (DoSomething.org)
  • Drivers have a greater chance of crashing during the first 3 months after they get their license than they will at any other point in their lives. (Teen Driver Source)
  • One out of every five 16-year-old drivers will be in an accident during their first year of driving. (Geico)

Tips To Set Your Teen Driver Up For Success

Your teen does not have to be a part of these statistics! Here are a few simple suggestions parents, grandparents, older siblings, or other guardians/role models can use to help their young driver become masters of the road.
  • Start On Country Roads Or Big, Empty Parking Lots. Your teen will likely be just as nervous as you are the first time he/she gets behind the wheel. Do yourselves a favor and let your teen first get a feel for the car without any other nearby drivers.
  • Run Through Different Scenarios In A Safe Location. While you're on an empty road or vacant parking lot, take the opportunity to test-run through different scenarios. Have your teen practice accelerating/decelerating quickly, stopping, starting, parking, turning abruptly at high and low speeds, and parallel parking.
  • Remind Your Driver To Keep His Hands At 3:00 And 9:00 On The Steering Wheel. Keeping both hands on either side of the steering wheel in this manner will give him maximum flexibility and control of the car.
  • Take A Deep Breath And Remain Calm. Nothing is more stressful for a new driver than having a highly stressed adult passenger in the front seat. Young drivers are typically nervous enough as it is - don't add to their stress!
