Winter Driving Tips

There’s fresh snow on the ground and the temperature has been below freezing the last couple of days. The road conditions are affected by this weather, and the best car dealership at the Lake of the Ozarks wants to make sure that you are safe when out on the roadways. A few weeks ago we gave you tips to make sure your car was prepared for the winter weather, this week, Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC has tips for driving in this winter weather. If you don’t have to be out on the roadways when it’s snowing and icy, it’s best to stay home. If you do have to travel during this time, keep these tips in mind for safe travels.

Tips For Driving In The Snow

Tip 1 - It’s important to drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Whether it’s accelerating, braking, stopping, or turning, it will take longer with snow on the ground versus dry pavement. Give yourself extra time when driving.

Tip 2 - Accelerate and decelerate slowly. The best way to regain traction without skidding is to apply the gas slowly to accelerate. Accelerating too quickly can cause you to lose control of the car. You should also begin to brake sooner. It takes longer to come to a stop on snow-covered roads.

Tip 3 - When the road is covered in snow or ice, you should allow eight to ten seconds between you and the car in front of you. The normal dry pavement following distance is three to four seconds. By increasing this time when there is snow on the ground gives you more time to come to a stop if necessary.

Tip 4 - If you can avoid it, don’t come to a complete stop. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia your car needs to start moving again from a complete stop versus if your car is still slowly rolling. If it’s safe to do so, slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes.

Tip 5 - During the winter months, it’s extremely important to know your brakes. Whether your brakes are antilock or not, the best way to stop is threshold braking. You should keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake.

Tip 6 - Don’t power up hills. When you apply extra gas on snow-covered roads your wheels will start to spin. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill, that inertia will help you get up the hill.

Tip 7 - Stay home. If you really don’t need to go out, it’s best to stay off the roads. Even if you have no problem driving in the snow, other people that are on the road might not be as good. If your errands can wait, it’s best to wait until the roadways are better.

Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC hopes that these winter driving tips help you stay safe while out on the roadways. Remember, even if the roads look safe, there is still a chance for black ice. No matter the weather, it’s always a great idea to take it slow during the winter. If your car needs service or any type of maintenance, bring it into the best car dealership at the Lake of the Ozarks. Safety is our number one priority, and we want to make sure you are safe while driving this winter.
