GM Cars from the Silver Screen

If you were asked to think about your favorite movie, chances are an image of a vehicle from that movie would flash through your mind.  Vehicles have always been an integral part of the silver screen, and so our family owned and operated Lake of the Ozarks Dealership thought it would be fun to take a look back at some famous General Motors vehicles!

Transformers

For most die-hard Chevy Muscle Car fans, Transformers is probably at the top of your list!  This is a story about ‘Transformers’ from space that end up on Earth and have the ability to disguise (or ‘transform’) themselves as vehicles.  The first Transformer movie featured a 1977 Chevrolet Camaro known as ‘Bumblebee’.  The character gets its name from the unique yellow and black color combination.  Later in the movie, Bumblebee gets a makeover, so to speak, and emerges with the redesigned 2010 Camaro body style.  Transformers was released in 2007, and Bumblebee’s new look was based on the 2006 Camaro concept.  What makes this really special is that Chevrolet hadn’t produced a Camaro since 2002!

Days of Thunder

This film is a movie night MUST for us at Hulett Chevrolet Buick GMC!  Tom Cruise plays a racecar driver named Cole Trickle who joins the NASCAR Winston Cup with his sights set on winning the Indy 500.  The race car Trickle drives is a 1990 Chevrolet Lumina.  Throughout the movie, Trickle’s Lumina changes designs with different paint schemes and sponsors.  Our favorite has to be the black and green Mello Yello design!  The first time we see Cole speed around the track, his Lumina is sponsored by City Chevrolet, which is a real-life dealership in Charlotte, North Carolina!  What makes this tidbit even cooler is that City Chevrolet Dealership is actually owned by Rick Hendrick of Hendrick Motor Sports!

Smokey and the Bandit

There should be no surprise that this one made our list!  The movie follows Bandit and Snowman as they illegally transport 400 cases of Coors from Texarkana to Atlanta with Sheriff Buford T. Justice hot on their trail!   The Bandit speeds down the highways and pulls some crazy maneuvers in his 1977 Trans Am to keep the Sheriff occupied while his partner in crime carries the goods.  What car lover hasn’t dreamt of being the Bandit whizzing around in his Trans Am!  Smokey and the Bandit was the second highest grossing domestic movie of 1977 (second to Star Wars).  After the film’s debut, Trans Am sales skyrocketed and for the first time ever, actually outsold its Chevy Camaro counterpart!

Ghostbusters

Most of you are probably wondering why we’re including this one (aside from the fact that it’s a comedy classic!) and it’s because of the very unique Ecto-1.  The movie follows three professors who start a ghost removal service as New York becomes overwhelmed with paranormal activity.  The car they drive around the City in is a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Ambulance conversion.  The Miller-Meteor production was a short one, and only about 400 of them were produced!

American Graffiti

This movie is a no-brainer for any car enthusiasts’ list.  The film takes place in 1962 and follows a group of best friends who are recent high school grads on their last night of shenanigans before heading off to college.  The films’ focus is on the teenage pop-culture of that era, and cars were a huge part of it!  There are some true General Motors gems in this film, like Ron Howards’ 1958 Impala and Harrison Fords’ 1955 Chevy 150, just to name a couple!  Fun Fact: The ’55 Chevy 150 was also used in the movie Two-Lane Blacktop featuring singer James Taylor.
