Driving Tips For Winter

It's officially the cold season! The days of mild weather are over, as the Lake of the Ozarks experienced our first snowfall of the season. With more snow surely on its way over the next couple of months, the team at Hulett Chevrolet-Buick-GMC wanted to share with you a few tips to keep you and your family safe. If you have to drive in winter conditions, here are a few tips you should keep in mind.

Before Leaving

- Never run your vehicle in an enclosed area like a garage.

- The cold weather affects the pressure in your tires, so make sure they are properly inflated before leaving.

- Keep the gas tank at least half full.

- Buckle up every time you get into your vehicle, no matter the weather.

- Check weather reports prior to leaving to know if bad weather is expected, especially if you are going to be driving in isolated areas.

- Keep an emergency kit handy stocked with blankets, nonperishable foods and water.

Long Distance Winter Driving Tips

- Let others know of your destination, route and estimated time of arrival.

- Ensure your vehicle is in peak operating condition by having it serviced at a trusted Lake of the Ozarks auto shop

- Make sure your cell phone is fully charged in case of an emergency. In addition, have a working car charger available to use in case your battery dies.

Tips For Driving In Snow

- Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas or break too fast could cause your car to spin out.

- Drive slowly. This is the best way to keep traction and avoid skidding. Nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.

- Give yourself plenty of room between cars to increase the margin of safety in case you need to stop.

- Don't stop if you can avoid it. It is a lot more difficult to get going on icy roads from a complete stop. If you can roll, it is a lot easier to get going again. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.

- Don't go too quickly up hills. Applying too much pressure on your gas peddles when the roads are covered in snow will just make your wheels spin. Try to get a bit of speed going before you reach a hill and let it carry you up to the top. As you reach the tip, reduce your speed and proceed down ass slowly as you can.

- Don't stop while on a hill. There is nothing more difficult than trying to get moving while on an icy hill.

- Don't go out if you don't have too. Even if you can drive well in snow, not everyone else can. If you don't have somewhere you have to be, stay home and enjoy a snow day.
