13 Tips for Improving Your Fuel Economy in the Hot Summer Weather

Did you know that the temperature outside can affect your fuel economy? The hot summer weather heats up your engine more quickly and efficiently. Unfortunately, how your maintain the temperature inside your car can also affect the fuel economy. The number one reason for reduced fuel economy during the hot summer months is running the AC in your vehicle. In fact, running the AC on full blast can reduce your fuel efficiency up to 25%. However, it is better than leaving your windows down, as that increases the car's aerodynamic drag, making the engine work harder.

Keep reading to learn about ways that you can improve your fuel economy this summer, without you and your passengers suffering in the heat. Your friends at our Lake of the Ozarks car dealership are here to help you save gas and money this summer!

Tips for Improving Fuel Economy

Below are a few things that you can do to improve your fuel economy when driving in the hot summer sun:

  1. Park in the shade or use a sun shade whenever you can so that your vehicle cabin doesn't get as hot.
  2. When you first take off, leave the windows down to release the built up hot air from the cabin.
  3. Don't idle with the AC running before driving; keep the windows down until you're on the road and then turn the AC on.
  4. At low speeds, leave your windows down. However, if you increase speed, roll them up and use the AC to keep cool.
  5. Don't use the AC more than needed, and set it to a lower temperature.
  6. Watch your speed. Stomping on the accelerator burns through more fuel.
  7. Using your cruise control can help you maintain the same speed, and keep your fuel economy under control.
  8. Tighten or replace your gas cap. This can increase your fuel economy by up to 2% as it ensures gas isn't evaporating through a loose or old, worn gas cap.
  9. Ensure your tires are inflated properly to reduce rolling friction on the road.
  10. Swap out dirty air filters so your car can breathe more easily.
  11. Get your oil changed regularly.
  12. Remove any excess weight from your car; excess weight is directly proportionate to decreased fuel economy.
  13. Plan your route ahead of time and try to avoid lots of traffic lights and heavy traffic. The shortest route isn't always the most fuel efficient.
